We Spoke With Julie

We had the privilege to sit down with Julie and pick her brain a little bit.

What follows is that interview. 

1. Tell us about your clinical practise/business

I wear a few hats, juggling both a niche clinical practice while providing educational opportunities for professionals both live and online.

My focus in both roles is to provide integrative strategies to bridge the gap between pelvic health and ortho/sports medicine rehabilitation and return to fitness. In addition, I teach alternative postural control strategies that are inclusive of breath mechanics and pelvic health as a gateway to central stability in neurological populations.

But isn’t every patient a mix of all of those populations?

Treating from a systems perspective and understanding that “it is all connected” is one of the foundational principles I share with my patients and course participants.

My focus is on neuromuscular strategies that use breath mechanics as a gateway to automatic participation of the central stabilizing system (AKA “core”).

This makes an accessible foundation for movement, function, and fitness for all populations-neuro, pediatrics, ortho., sports medicine, and pelvic health.

Treating from a systems and strategy approach addresses the needs of the client simultaneously as connected whole-pelvic health, musculoskeletal, neurological movement efficiency, and performance.

2. What's the best continuing education course or conference you've ever taken (this can be clinical, business, webinar, live, etc.)?

The courses that had the most profound impact on how I treat patients were anything I took from Shirley Sahrmann (I sort of followed her around like a groupie) and Gary Gray. Both taught me to look at the whole picture and treat functionally.

3. What's your favourite book?

Personal Resource: Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership by Ruth Haley Barton

4. What's your favourite blog, podcast or online resource?

I am terribly behind on every podcast I subscribe to, but one of my faves is the PTPintcast.

Favourite blogs include Chris Beardsley and Sweat Science.

Love Ryan Smith’s Movements of the Day (MODs).

5. What advice would you give to your 25-year-old self?

  • Change is an evolution, not a revolution. Be patient, and stand strong even when you are swimming against the tide.
  • Never stop learning.
  • Stop cursing like a sailor (hasn’t happened yet!)
  • Stop dating that guy….wait for the Canadian (my hubby is a proud Canadian).

6. What's something you've recently learned that you're really excited to implement?

I gained some tips on stroke and bike modifications for tri-athletes at a recent conference. Just need a tri-athlete on my schedule!

7. Why did you decide to join the Embodia instructor community?

The online platform is such an incredible way to get information into the hands of folks that don’t readily have access to continuing education or need the convenience of self-paced learning.

It has beautifully expedited the dissemination of information, rather than waiting years for an instructor to make their way to your town, the info is at your fingertips now.

I have been so impressed with what Maggie and her Embodia team have been endeavouring to do, and the skill level with which they have to pursue it.

How perfect is it to have a physio who understands the rehab piece and con-ed, teamed with a techie partner who understands building platforms and delivering content?
