Overview

This is a free live online webinar series with Dr. Sinéad Dufour. Each week we will cover a different topic related to diastasis rectus abdominis (DRA). You must register for the full series. If you cannot attend live you can:

  1. Watch the livestream on Embodia's YouTube channel which will be available for 48 hours after the live event.
  2. Purchase the recordings. The recordings from this webinar will be made available as a paid, on-demand course on Embodia Academy.


Outline of the Modules in this Series


Module 1 - Overview of Diastasis Rectus Abdominis (DRA) and Implications for Pregnancy

In this module, participants will be introduced to the topic of diastasis rectus abdominis and the implications for this issue and the broader abdominal wall during pregnancy. Aspects of pregnancy-related anatomy and physiology will be reviewed as will current evidence-informed expert recommendations for pregnancy.  


Module 2 - DRA and Implications for the Post-Partum Abdominal Wall

In this module, the focus will be on the postpartum context. In addition to reviewing the current evidence-informed expert recommendations for both early- and late post-partum, implications for the abdominal wall and DRA with respect to Caesarean birth will be reviewed.  
Concepts will be applied to a clinical case with the full clinical consultation included as a resource for this module.  


Module 3 - DRA: Evaluation and Assessment

In this module, participants will learn how to approach DRA and abdominal wall health from a multi-system perspective. The current evidence-informed expert recommendations for DRA assessment will be reviewed and there will be several accompanying videos demonstrating assessment strategies that will be included as resources for this module. In addition, several psychometrically sound questionnaires will be discussed for consideration to build a comprehensive assessment. This module also includes a case example that highlights various assessment strategies that are done via virtual care.     


Module 4 - DRA: Intervention Strategies, Including Surgery

In this module, key intervention strategies will be reviewed and the grading of supporting evidence discussed. The interventions that will be reviewed are exercise, external compression, manual therapy and lifestyle interventions and will be clinically applied to a case. 

 

Audience

This live webinar series is geared towards any rehab or fitness professional or other professionals working with perinatal clients including physiotherapists, doulas, midwives, MDs, Nurses, etc.

In this module, a review of key concepts covered in modules 1-4 will be undertaken and current gaps in the research literature and clinical care landscape will be highlighted. Clinical applications in emerging areas such as postpartum DRA for elite athletes will be reviewed. 

 

The instructors
Dr. Sinéad Dufour
PT, PhD

Dr. Sinéad Dufour is an academic clinician who shares her time between clinical pursuits as the Director of Pelvic Health at the WOMB and academic pursuits in the Faculty of Health Science at McMaster University. She has been a practicing physiotherapist for 20 years. She completed her MScPT at McMaster University (2003), her PhD in Health and Rehabilitation Science at Western (2011), and returned to McMaster to complete a post-doctoral fellowship (2014). Her current research interests include conservative approaches to optimize pelvic floor function, pregnancy-related pelvic-girdle pain, and interprofessional collaborative practice models of service provision to enhance pelvic health and perinatal fitness for elite athletes.

Sinéad is an active member of several organizations charged with optimizing perinatal care and pelvic health and has led and contributed many national and international clinical practice guidelines to improve care provision. Sinéad also currently serves as a council member for the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, Canada. Sinéad is a well-recognized speaker at conferences around the world and a sought-after expert to consult with companies whose aim is to improve perinatal care and pelvic health.
