Within this course we explore various health-related topics as they apply to the transgender and gender-diverse community. Topics include exercise, mental health, mindfulness, nutrition, and more. Participants will gain a greater understanding of each of these topics and be able to apply them to their own lives.

With an increased understanding of these topics, participants will be able to begin exercising safely and effectively while making better nutritional choices to work towards desired aesthetic goals. Through these actions and as well as practicing mindfulness, participants will ultimately improve mental health and quality of life.

Course objectives:

  1. To develop an understanding of various aspects of exercise, and how to incorporate it in to their lives
  2. To develop the knowledge of the benefits of exercise, and how it pertains to not only physical health but mental health
  3. To develop an understanding and skills needed to practice mindfulness and meditation to ease the mind and reduce stress
  4. To develop an understanding of what nutrition is and be aware of what resources are available for use to improve one’s nutrition consumption


This course is designed mainly for transgender and gender-diverse individuals but may be taken by anyone who wishes to improve their physical and mental health through exercise, as well as healthcare professionals who are interested in learning more about the unique health needs of transgender and gender-diverse individuals.

The instructors
Jodi Steele
PT, BKin, BSc(PT)

Jodi earned her kinesiology degree in 1997 and a physiotherapy degree in 1999 from McMaster University. Upon graduation she co-developed an oncology rehabilitation program, Cancer Rehab-The Next Step. In 2005 her husband joined her and founded Cancer Rehab Inc., Canada’s first not-for-profit cancer rehabilitation centre.

In 2009, Jodi designed, developed and launched Wellspring’s Cancer Exercise Program, which continues to be delivered at sites throughout southern Ontario. For her innovative contributions to society, Jodi received the 2009 Arch Award from McMaster University.

Presently Jodi is a professor at Niagara College. She continues to educate peers through educational lectures focusing on cancer exercise and rehabilitation for health care professionals and lymphedema management in the home care setting.
