Overview

This online course will describe the critical need for applying resistance training for older adults in order to combat frailty/sarcopenia, falls, loss of independence.

This presentation will explain practical ways to perform resistance training across a variety of settings.

Learning Objectives

  2. Apply resistance training exercises to a wide variety of older adult patients
  3. Appraise the literature surrounding resistance training for older adults


The Presenter: Dr. Alex Germano | PT, DPT, GCS, Cert-MMOA, CF-L2 

Dr. Alex Germano is a Physical Therapist with experience in outpatient home visits and a history of coaching fitness since 2010. She received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2017 from Northwestern University.

Alex is a board certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist (GCS) and has an additional certification in vestibular rehabilitation. Her practice in bringing exercise-forward interventions to patients is inspired by her participation in CrossFit.

It is comprised of physiotherapists from across Canada who work with older adults in a variety of practice settings, including acute geriatric care, geriatric rehabilitative and restorative units, long term care settings, community based and home care settings.

SHD is a member of The International Association of Physical Therapists working with Older Persons.

Vision of the Seniors' Health Division: Older Canadians are moving, moving more and moving better with the help of physiotherapists.

Mission of the Seniors' Health Division: To support our members in providing excellent physiotherapy care to optimize the independence and quality of life of older adults.
